Commitment by Alex Whalen

“A lobotomy, it doesn’t sound threatening,” I repeated to myself while I lie on the cold metal slab. I know it was unnecessary, but like all patients I lost the already damned battle. Let me explain myself to someone I know is willing to listen. You.

It all started with my sentence to the asylum, the place that would assuage the life of someone like me…a lunatic as they called it. At first like every other truthfully sane person that was sent to decay within the walls of this place, I was told that I was recovering. That I will surely be released soon. LIES! I knew it would never happen. I would never feel the calming rays of the sun reach me. I would never be able to enjoy the umbrage in the meadow behind my house ever again.

Weeks, then months, then years passed until I got the rush of happiness and freedom of the surmise of my sentence of this wretched prison. They said it would ameliorate me. I got to speak with the head of this so called hospital.

“They said you’re doing better,” He paused then it came, “What do you think?”

Nervously the words spilled out of my mouth. “Yes, I agree.”

He then replied with no hesitation to thought, not even the slightest bit of consideration. “Unfortunately your psych evaluation tells a different story.”

“Excuse me?”

“It’s been stated by your doctor that you seem unstable and extremely agitated by even the simplest things.”

I couldn’t believe what I just heard. I’m being forced to stay in this living hell for the rest of my pathetic life.

As I walked out of the room this cold sensation filled my body. Further down the hall I saw him, the man that filled my head with lies. I can’t describe the feeling of rage that overcame me.

“How was the meeting?” He said followed by a grimace more crazed than the mind of anyone admitted to this place.

At this point I realized.

“You did it on purpose.”

“Excuse me?” The words crawling from his lips like demons from hell.

“You did,” I said.

He just laughed.

“You’re mistaken. Have you taken your pills?”

I froze. I couldn’t move. The rage I stopped me in my tracks. So many things were going through my head but nothing made sense. He pulled his quill tip pen from his pocket.

“Here’s another prescription for your medication.” He pulled the paper from the pad and stuck out his hand. I stood there in awe. The one person who knew I was sane and could have helped me get released was keeping me in.

I stood speechless staring at the paper in his hand. My mind went blank. The only thing in my head was revenge. I looked at his chest and there was my instrument of revenge, his pen. I reached my hand out but not far for the prescription. I snatched the pen out of his pocket.

The words fell from his mouth, “Orderly!” One’s attacking me.”

But, before anyone could react I grabbed his lab coat and threw him against the stone cold wall and whispered in his ear. “I along I let you convince me I was the lunatic, but no—you are. I have to help every other sane person here and end your sociopathic reign of this hell!”

A smile came over his face. “But, I didn’t get caught.”

Then I lost all control and thrust the sharp tip of the pen across his neck and let him fall into the lurid scene of his own blood. I stepped away and dropped my instrument of revenge. Not even seconds passed before the head of the hospital ran to the scene, dropped to his knees, and looked up.

“What the hell have you done!”

I did this hell a favor. I felt a sharp pain in my neck. I looked behind me and saw a blurry figure of an orderly hit me. I was injected with a sedative and…I fell.

Ghost Chasers By: Gabriel Ainsworth

Once upon a time, there were 4 Ghost Chasers who lived in New York City. Their names were Spengler Jr, Stantz Jr, Venkman Jr, and Zeddemore Jr. They were the sons of Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, and Winston Zeddemore who were a group that hunted down ghosts in the mid 80s to early 90s (The Ghostbusters).
The Ghost Chasers were born in 1984 around the time the Ghostbusters were hunting down ghosts. The Ghost Chasers were named after their fathers. Spengler Jr, Stantz Jr, Venkman Jr, and Zeddemore Jr. had dreams of becoming paranormal hunters like their fathers when they were children because they thought it would be cool to hunt down and destroy ghosts or spirits. The 4 children eventually got to fulfill their destinies to become paranormal hunters when they grew up and transcended through college at the New York City Paranormal Institute in 2003. They all graduated in 2007 and formed their own group of paranormal hunters called The Ghost Chasers.
One day in 2009, the Ghost Chasers received a case to investigate paranormal activity at an old asylum from the mid 1800s called The Trans-Alleghany Lunatic Asylum in a small city of Weston, WV. The asylum in the past has kept many prisoners from the Civil War to dangerous felons like Charles Manson. The employees who work at the landmark have asked the Ghost Chasers for their help in investigating and destroying the fractious spirits that infringe within the asylum. There had been rumors that employees and tourists have been inveighed and physically attacked within the building for the past decade. Spengler Jr, Stantz Jr, Venkman Jr, and Zeddemore Jr all got on a plane to travel from New York to Clarksburg, WV to solve the case.
Once the Ghost Chasers arrived at North Central West Virginia Airport in Clarksburg, They took a bus to Weston, WV to the asylum which was a half hour away from the Clarksburg. The Ghost Chasers arrived at Trans-Alleghany Lunatic Asylum late afternoon and met one of the employees who told them all these rumors of attacks that happened for the last decade. They were appalled by this information and commiserated over the ones who were abused by these ghosts. The Ghost Chasers were prepared for the unexpected when they started the investigation and hunting for spirits later that night and got their proton packs ready. The proton packs would shoot out electricity to weaken the ghost and destroy it.
It was about 10:30 PM that night and the asylum was closed for the night as the ghost chasers started their hunt for ghosts. It was very creepy and dark within the building. At 11:00 PM, the ghost chasers were on the 1st floor of the asylum and in the hallway. Spengler Jr. spotted a flash of light looming off in the distance. The other chasers began to cower and charged their proton packs just in case. The flash of light disappeared into thin air after about 5 seconds. The Ghost Chasers were anxious and didn’t what to expect next. They began to hear a voice as they started heading up to the 2nd floor. The voice sounded sounded like an elderly man with a raspy voice and was saying “Get Out”! Spengler Jr, Stantz Jr, Venkman Jr, and Zeddemore Jr were trying to infer why this spirit wanted them out so badly. Zeddemore Jr was communicating to the spirit asking it questions and enjoining it: “Who are you?” “Show yourself!” But there was a dead silence and no one appeared in sight. The Ghost Chasers were set to use their proton packs in case of an upcoming attack. They saw nothing but darkness but all of a sudden Stantz Jr was pinned to a wall and hovering in mid air. The other chasers saw Stantz Jr being choked while pinned to a wall in the air by a spirit who looked white as snow in form. They started firing away their proton packs at the vicious spirit. After a minute of firing, the Spirit was killed and vanished as Stantz Jr fell to the floor catching his breath.
The Ghost Chasers continued their investigation with caution as they headed up to the 3rd floor. This time they heard many different types of voices. There were a few voices that sounded like men saying “Who are you?” Some of the other voices said “Interlopers!” The Ghost Chasers formed a coalition to prepare for the unexpected. All of a sudden the ghost chasers saw about 10 spirits appear in front of them. They started firing away at the ghosts and killed all of them. After the shooting there was a moment of silence. Spengler Jr, Stantz Jr, Venkman Jr, and Zeddemore Jr were lurid, their adrenalines were pumping and their hearts were beating at a fast pace. Out of nowhere a huge spirit appeared in front of them. It looked like the spirit of Charles Manson. The spirit looked creepy from appearance. He looked deformed in a kind of way and talked in a raspy type voice. The spirit was an estimate 7 feet tall and felt cold when you came within two feet in front of it. The spirit had a dirty but furious look on his face. “What have you done to my ghost friends!?” “YOU MURDERED THEM!” Spengler Jr, Stantz Jr, Venkman Jr, and Zeddemore Jr were quivering and wondering what this spirit was going to do to them. The spirit was still belligerent and getting out of control “My friends will be avenged!” The spirit them started an attack on the ghost chasers. The Ghost Chasers tried to destroy the spirit of Charles Manson but the spirit was too fast to catch. He was speedy like a car going 100 mph. Venkman Jr did manage to get a clean shot at him and fired away. The proton charges didn’t affect the spirit or weaken him. The proton packs for all the ghost chasers were almost out of power and didn’t have enough proton charges to do a lot of damage on a ghost. The Ghost Chasers thought that could be their only hope in destroying this spirit. They devised a plan to destroy the spirit once and for all. They ran with their proton packs into an old room on the 3rd floor and shut the door tight so the spirit couldn’t break through. They quickly recharged all the proton packs to full and maximum power as fast as they could. “HURRY!” enjoined Zeddemore Jr. They formed a coalition to fire together to maximum fire power to destroy the ghost. They did a countdown “1,2,3” and immediately let the spirit open the door and the ghost chasers fired away their proton packs at full fire power at once. The recharging of the proton packs paid off, the ghost took heavy damage and was weaken after a few some hits to his head and body. Shortly after, the ghost chasers used up _ of the energy in their proton packs to destroy the spirit. The spirit blew up and vanished into oblivion.
Spengler Jr, Stantz Jr, Venkman Jr, and Zeddemore Jr were assuaged that all the spirits including the spirit of Charles Manson have all been destroyed. It was about 2:30 AM after they finally destroyed the spirit of Charles Manson. The Ghost Chasers fell asleep from lassitude of carrying the heavy proton packs and being up for 16 hours straight in the old room on the 3rd floor. They awoke to find the employees and the director of the Asylum cheering and happy they had ridden the asylum of the ghastly ghosts that had been haunting them.
Later that day, the ghost chasers received thanks from all the residents in Weston and also received a medal for their courage in defeating the spirits and the asylum was spirit free from then on.

McDonald's Globaly By: Roshni Patel

Indian McDonald’s is very different from American McDonald’s. I surmise you do not know the differences. It has many different varieties of food, like sandwiches, pastas, vegetables with rice, sweet tea, and so many different things. It has many vegetarian dishes also, like samosas and Manchurians (little dumplings with vegetables inside). I prefer eating at McDonald’s in India, because there are so many vegetarian items.

Are Dinosaurs Extinct? By: Alex Whalen

Are dinosaurs extinct? New evidence has been brought to our attention that the meteor whipped out the most famous and large dinosaurs like the T-Rex.  But, the meteor never finished them completely.  Research by Jack Horner  has shown that they had the same hollow bones as modern birds and some paleontologists believe that select groups of dinosaurs did have feathers.  That’s right facts have lead us to believe that dinosaurs never went extinct but evolved into modern birds.

2010 Oakley Splices By: Andrew Orfanidis

The Oakley Splice line of goggles are easily the most comfortable and clean goggles I have ever worn. This year I bought a pair of the Lava Sky Splices and I give them 5 out of 5 stars. The vision is so clear and crisp you wouldn’t even know you have goggles on. All the Splices come with Plutonite lenses and Iridium lens coating that protect your eyes from any rays. Splices come in a variety of colors and graphics all of which I find to be great. These goggles range from $120-$190+ mine were $159 but in my mind they are worth every penny.

Rob Brown By: Cees Plomp

Once upon a time, in a town called Weston, there was a quiet little man called Rob Brown. He was an unassuming man who became an accountant, got married young, and had no children. He was a fairly intelligent person, as such things are reckoned, and he never made any serious mistakes with his life-except one. It was not too horrible a mistake for most people, and in many people’s case it would not be a mistake. What he did was to trust his wife.

She was, for six years, trustworthy, but unfortunately never truly happy with the level of comfort he was able to give her on his modest salary. When she met a man she found attractive and wealthy, she started a love affair with him, then managed to convince him it was worth his while to eliminate her husband in order to have her to himself. This new man, who will not be named, was a prestigious doctor from New York. He had some people who owed him favors, and he used them to have Rob Brown pronounced insane and committed to the nearest asylum, which happened to be the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Rob tried to avoid it, but there was nothing he could do once pronounced mad. This was to be the worst and last part of Rob’s life.

In the asylum, he was unable to convince anyone that he was, in fact, sane. Soon, he stopped caring. All that mattered to him was staying away from doctors and orderlies at any time, in order to avoid “treatments”. He found those to be the worst part of living there, and he would often offer almost anything the other patients wanted if they would help him hide from the authorities. One day, this habit became his downfall, as it led to him being marked “antisocial”. While in some places, this would mean that the staff would try to get him to participate more in group activities, this place attempted nothing of the sort-indeed, group activities were seen by most workers as a waste of time. The end result of his antisocial diagnosis was that he was scheduled for the next lobotomy.

Lobotomies were the most feared procedure at the asylum, and with good reason. Although most patients did survive, despite the beliefs of the public, it usually ended up with the victim becoming a vegetable, or simply going into a coma. Rob did not know he was to be lobotomized until the day Walter Freeman arrived. Walter was famous for popularizing the new “ice-pick” method of lobotomies, which involved strapping a patient down, placing an ice-pick under their eyelids, and hammering it up into the front their skull with a mallet. Once it was in the brain, the pick would be swept from side to side, then removed.

Rob did not know any of this. All he knew was that for no reason he could see, doctors caught him in his room, sedated him, and took him strapped to a gurney to one of the operating rooms. Luckily for him, he was sedated enough not to care where he was taken, not to care when he saw a blood-covered man wheeled out on a gurney of his own, and not to care when he heard a voice (That of Walter Freeman, although he didn’t know it), call out “Bring in number 44!”. All he felt was a slight pressure on his eye when the pick was slipped in, then in his forehead when it was hammered into his brain. After that, he never felt-as we know it- again. Once his operation was done, he was wheeled out, and Walter called out “Bring in number 45!”. He lived a few more months, if you want to call it living, then quietly perished from starvation after he began refusing to eat. His wife, upon hearing the news, felt nothing but mild surprise. In fact, the only one to care about his death was his parents, who ended up bringing his body home to be buried, and attempting to have the lobotomies stopped. Sadly, their efforts were not enough to stop the operations, and Rob Brown was, in time, forgotten as anything but another victim of the Trans-Alleghney Lunatic Asylum.

The Titans By: Gabriel Ainsworth

The 2009 Tennessee Titans NFL Team is currently in a world of hurt. They have a 3-6 season record and have the possibility of finishing their season strong with a 7-9 or 8-8 record for the regular season according to the remainder of their schedule. They might win all of their remaining games but it’s a doubt.
The 2009 Tennessee Titans were predicted to win 9 or 10 games and possibly be a playoff team but their season isn’t fairing well for what was expected from them this season. The Titans started the season 0-6 under Kerry Collins as the starting quarterback. Kerry Collins hasn’t helped the Titans win games this season. He has played horribly this season compared to last season when he went 12-3 as the starter after Vince Young injured himself late in the second half in the Titans 2008 season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Collins helped the Titans go to a 13-3 regular season record in 2008 and helped the Titans get the #1 seed and home field advantage in the AFC Playoffs. The Titans eventually were upset by #4 Seeded Baltimore Ravens 13-10 at home. The Titans defense hasn’t played so well this year. Their defense is horrible compared to last season. The Titans defense currently is ranked almost last in NFL in pass defense (31st) as compared to last season when they were ranked 7th.The Titans rush defense hasn’t played well either. Their rush defense is better than their pass defense. The Titans rush defense this season currently ranks 16th as compared to last season when they were ranked 5th. The Titans offense however, seems to have picked up where it left off from last season. The Titans ground game has definitely picked up where it left off. They are currently ranked 2nd behind The New York Jets in rushing offense. Their passing offense has played the same since last year too, having ranked 26th.
After the Titans lost their first six games with Kerry Collins being the starter in the 2009 season, the Titans replaced Kerry Collins with backup quarterback Vince Young as the starter for the remainder of the season. From then on the Titans have won 3 straight games with Vince Young being the starting quarterback to go to 3-6 so far. Vince Young have played equitable but average, he’s had two passer ratings of 90 the pass two games and had one 114.1 in his first start this season when he completed 15-18 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown and no interceptions in a 30-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 1, 2009. His performance has ameliorated since earlier this season. Vince Young played in one game two weeks earlier before his first start on October 11, 2009 against the Indianapolis Colts late in the second half to get some playing time and didn’t play so well. He threw a pick and no touchdowns in 31-9 lost. Vince Young overall in his first 3 starts has an 85.9 passer rating and has thrown for 507 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
The Tennessee Titans have never had a 10-6 regular season record after starting a season 0-6 in team history. The Titans started their 2006 season 0-5 and ameliorated to 8-8 when rookie Vince Young took over as the starting quarterback after the titans started 0-3 under their original starter Kerry Collins. Vince Young went to an 8-5 record as the starter that season and the titans almost made the playoffs but came up short when they had to win their remaining three games of their season. They won the first two but lost their season finale which could have helped the titans make the final seed in the 2006 AFC Playoffs.
The Titans are hoping to transcend on their winning streak and finish their season meritorious. If there’s some miracle, the titans win all their remaining games and possibly make the playoffs but that’s not going to be easy and it’s almost impossible. They’re going to have to work some magic, have a sedulous attitude, and rely on their offense to help win their games especially their running game if they expect to come away with a winning record this late in the season even if it means winning their games by smoke and mirrors.
